Todd Waugh, Opal’s co-founder, has worked as a lawyer at one of Australia’s most reputable law firms, where he was trained to think critically, test assumptions and support recommendations with clear reasoning. 

What began as a personal interest quickly became an obsession with understanding how strong property decisions are actually made. That meant studying the headlines, history, fundamentals and strategic drivers of long term value. He combined this with drawing on the insight of professionals including town planners, accountants and brokers.

That process led to the acquisition of a property in Melbourne with development potential at a time when many would have questioned the move. The headlines were negative. The sentiment was poor. But the data, the fundamentals and the professional advice pointed to a different conclusion.

So the decision was made to back the process.

Within a year, that asset delivered a stronger financial result than Todd’s day job. More importantly, it proved what a disciplined, well-reasoned property decision can do over time. 

That property became the foundation of a growing portfolio, and ultimately, the reason Opal was created. Today, Opal exists to help clients make property decisions in that same way: thoughtfully, analytically and with a long term view.
